YouTube is updating Shorts recommendations to further prioritize original content and cut distribution for channels that mainly re-upload other creators’ clips without meaningful changes, Search Engine Journal and Social Media Today reported Oct. 1.

Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie outlined the change on YouTube’s Creator Insider channel, SEJ writes. Creators who remix another clip need to add their own commentary, analysis, or storytelling — not just voice-over descriptions, minor technical edits, or template-based bulk changes. Channels built primarily on aggregation can already lose monetization under reused-content rules; the Shorts update also reduces feed reach.

YouTube’s own statement, cited by Social Media Today, says channels identified as primarily aggregating or re-uploading without significant changes “will likely see less distribution within the Shorts feed,” while creators who shift toward original work will have reach re-evaluated. The platform ties the move to existing spam mitigation policy that bars reposting without original commentary, educational value, or unique editing.

Neither outlet reports a public dashboard for checking reduced reach or a fixed re-evaluation timeline. Ritchie asked creators to leave questions in the video comments. YouTube still frames re-sharing and quoting as valid when creators add a distinct point of view rather than mirroring another upload.

The push parallels Instagram’s April decision to stop recommending aggregator accounts in discovery surfaces, Social Media Today notes, after Instagram said original-content reach rose. For teams running clip factories, the practical test is whether edits create new commentary or merely cosmetic cuts.

For readers tracking creator-platform rules on Influencers, verified as of Oct. 1 reports: Shorts recommendations now weight original work higher; aggregator-style re-uploads face less distribution; channels that pivot to original content can be re-evaluated for reach.
