Netflix Greenlights Bridgerton Lady Violet Prequel Limited Series
Netflix greenlights a Bridgerton Lady Violet prequel limited series; Shonda Rhimes writes and co-showruns with Nicholas Nardini, Tom Verica directing.
Netflix has greenlit an untitled Bridgerton spinoff chronicling the early life of young Lady Violet and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter reported Oct. 8.
The project is a limited series from franchise producer Shondaland, following the model of 2023’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Shonda Rhimes will write, executive produce and co-showrun with Nicholas Nardini, her collaborator on Queen Charlotte. Deadline noted it is the first time the Grey’s Anatomy creator has written a show since that earlier Bridgerton universe limited series, where she wrote all but one episode and co-wrote another with Nardini.
Tom Verica, who directed and executive produced Queen Charlotte, returns in the same dual role. Shondaland’s Betsy Beers also executive produces. Unlike Queen Charlotte, which was an original creation drawn from Julia Quinn’s characters as adapted for Netflix, the Violet series has named source material: Quinn’s short novella Violet In Bloom, which tells the love story of Violet and Edmund. That literary hook gives the writers a tighter romance spine than inventing the entire courtship from scratch.
On the mothership series, Ruth Gemmell plays the widowed Bridgerton family matriarch; Connie Jenkins-Greig portrayed a younger Violet in Queen Charlotte. No cast has been announced for the new prequel. Speculation about another Bridgerton prequel limited series intensified after Queen Charlotte’s successful May 2023 launch, Deadline reported, and that series briefly cracked Netflix’s Most Popular English titles. Because Queen Charlotte already tracked Lady Danbury’s romances alongside young Charlotte, Violet’s “happily ever after” love story emerged as the most likely next character to headline her own spinoff.
Expanding the Bridgerton universe remains central to Netflix’s Shondaland relationship. Deadline reported Seasons 1 and 3 remain on Netflix’s Most Popular English series list, ranking No. 7 and No. 10, while Season 5 — shifting focus to Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza) — is currently in production in London. THR added that Season 4 spent nine weeks on the streamer’s weekly top 10 charts, peaked with 3.37 billion minutes of U.S. watch time in late February on Nielsen’s streaming original rankings, and that Netflix has renewed the main series through a sixth season. The streamer also built a dedicated UK studio for Shondaland’s Bridgerton filming, underscoring the franchise’s scale beyond streaming into consumer products and live experiences.
The greenlight arrives after lengthy development and speculation that the Violet prequel would be an early pickup under Rhimes’ new long-term overall deal with Netflix, signed in August, Deadline reported. Verica told Deadline in January that existing Bridgerton characters were already getting the Queen Charlotte treatment with more spinoffs in development. Pairing Rhimes’ return to the writers’ room with Verica’s established Bridgerton visual language and Quinn’s novella source positions the limited series as a character-forward romance rather than a procedural or mystery spin. How the writers cast young Violet and Edmund — and how they balance intimacy against the franchise’s known spectacle — will shape whether the prequel can match Queen Charlotte’s breakout footprint.
No premiere date was announced with the Oct. 8 order. More film and TV studio news is on our Studio page.
