Britney Spears Drops Vault Track ‘She’ll Never Be Me’ With Timberlake Credit
Britney Spears released the vault track She’ll Never Be Me, co-written with Justin Timberlake, ahead of the Britney 25th anniversary edition due Nov. 6.
Britney Spears has released “She’ll Never Be Me,” a previously unreleased track recorded for her 2001 self-titled album Britney. The song arrived on Oct. 9, weeks ahead of the Britney (25th Anniversary Edition) reissue due Nov. 6, TODAY reported. The Evening Standard confirmed the vault drop and Timberlake writing credit the same news cycle.
According to TODAY, the three-minute cut blends early-2000s bubblegum pop with Spears’ girlish-gritty vocal signature and girl-power framing. Lyric excerpts published by the network describe a narrator confronting an ex who has moved on with someone who looks like her — “Blond hair and dressed to a T” — before insisting the stand-in “She’ll never be me.” The Evening Standard quoted additional lines about an ex “lost in your own fantasy” and the refrain that there will “never be another me,” underscoring the song’s doppelgänger sting.
Writing and production credits reported by TODAY list Spears as lyricist, associated performer and composer, with Justin Timberlake, Bradley Daymond and Alex Greggs also credited as lyricists and composers. Riprock ’n’ Alex G is listed as a producer. The Evening Standard noted that Spears co-wrote the song with three others, including Timberlake, her boyfriend during the original album sessions after the pair first met on The Mickey Mouse Club and dated from 1999 to 2002.
“She’ll Never Be Me” is the first of five vault songs planned for the anniversary edition, TODAY reported. The other first-time inclusions cited by both outlets are “Am I a Sinner,” “When I Say So,” “My Big Secret,” and a studio recording of “Right Now (Taste The Victory)” known from Spears’ 2002 Pepsi commercial. Spears’ official Facebook page teased that “more surprises are coming every week” until the Nov. 6 reissue, the Evening Standard said, signaling a drip campaign rather than a single one-off drop.
Context around the original album remains part of the story. Britney followed …Baby One More Time and Oops!… I Did It Again; its lead single “I’m a Slave 4 U” peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard chart, the Evening Standard reported, with other singles including “Overprotected,” “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,” and a cover of Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock ’N’ Roll.” The album was nominated for best pop vocal album at the 2003 Grammys, and Spears and Timberlake’s earlier collaboration “What It’s Like to Be Me” closed the original record, the paper noted.
TODAY placed the release against Spears’ recent catalogue timeline, saying her last new song was 2023’s “Mind Your Business” with will.i.am, after the 2020 vault collaboration “Matches” with the Backstreet Boys. The Evening Standard likewise framed “She’ll Never Be Me” as her first song release since that 2023 single, even though the recording itself dates to 2001, and pointed to her 2022 Elton John collaboration “Hold Me Closer” and the end of her conservatorship as broader career markers.
