A24 Takes 'Elden Ring' to AFM After Amazon MGM Secures International Streaming Rights
Amazon MGM Studios has secured first-window streaming rights to A24's Alex Garland-directed Elden Ring in a large number of international territories, Deadline and Screen International reported Oct. 27. A24 will present the film, budgeted at $175 million to $200 million according to sources cited by both outlets, at the Nov. 10-15 American Film Market in Los Angeles.
A24 is taking Alex Garland's live-action adaptation of the video game Elden Ring to next month's American Film Market after Amazon MGM Studios secured first-window streaming rights to the film in a large number of international territories, according to reports published Tuesday, Oct. 27, by Deadline and Screen International.
Both trade outlets reported, citing sources, that the film carries a budget in the $175 million to $200 million range. Deadline said the figure is closer to the top of that range and described the project as the biggest-budget stand-alone title ever offered for sale at a film or television market.
A24, Amazon and the film's producers declined to comment, Deadline reported.
The Amazon MGM deal
According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios pre-empted interest from other buyers by acquiring international "pay-1" streaming rights, the first paid streaming window after a film's theatrical run, across a large number of markets. Sources told the outlet the agreement is "easily worth tens of millions of dollars." Financial terms and the specific territories were not disclosed.
Deadline also reported that A24 is fully financing the movie and that the deal could lead to promotional activations on Amazon's Twitch platform. Because the streaming rights in those territories have already been sold, distributors there cannot buy all-rights packages that combine theatrical and streaming rights.
Screen International said it understands the Amazon MGM pay-1 deal covers a large international footprint. The outlet added that in the United States the film will eventually stream on HBO Max under A24's existing domestic pay-1 output deal.
What buyers will see at AFM
The American Film Market runs Nov. 10 to 15 in Los Angeles, according to Screen International and Polygon. Screen reported that A24 will host a presentation during the market and that executives are expected to show visual material, though it said footage is unlikely because the film is still in post-production. Deadline reported there is due to be some kind of presentation, "potentially with footage."
The script has been closely held. Deadline reported that, in what it called an apparent industry first, A24 is flying members of its team to international buyers so they can read the screenplay in the presence of a staffer. The outlet said the script runs to at least 180 pages including visuals, and that parts of it are being withheld from buyers.
Polygon noted that the script had previously been reported at 160 pages plus 40 pages of additional imagery, and that Garland's longest film as a director to date is the 115-minute Annihilation.
A24's largest production
Screen International described Elden Ring as by far A24's biggest production to date, and Deadline called it the company's biggest-budget project. Deadline reported that Garland completed filming over the summer and that the movie is in post-production with Industrial Light & Magic.
Bandai Namco Entertainment and A24 announced on April 20, 2026, that the film would be shot for IMAX and released in theaters on March 3, 2028, according to Bandai Namco Entertainment America and IndieWire.
The cast is led by Kit Connor and includes Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, Nick Offerman, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird and Peter Serafinowicz, according to IndieWire. Deadline reported that Connor plays the protagonist and that Netflix chief content officer Peter Rice is producing alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA, George R.R. Martin and Vince Gerardis.
The source material
The Elden Ring game, released in 2022 by Japanese publisher Bandai Namco and developed by FromSoftware under director Hidetaka Miyazaki, has sold more than 30 million copies, according to IndieWire and Deadline. Its world was shaped with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, IndieWire reported.
Deadline reported that Garland and A24 are also set to team on a science-fiction film starring Zendaya that is due to shoot in 2027, and that it had heard nothing so far about a sequel to Elden Ring being in the works.
