Disney Greenlights Animated Artemis Fowl Series for Disney+
Eoin Colfer revealed at New York Comic Con that Disney greenlit an animated Artemis Fowl series for Disney Channel and Disney+, with Colfer on board as EP.
Disney is giving Artemis Fowl a second shot at the screen. Author Eoin Colfer announced at New York Comic Con on Sunday, Oct. 11, that an animated series based on his bestselling fantasy books has been greenlit for Disney Channel and Disney+, with Colfer serving as an executive producer, Deadline reported. Polygon confirmed the order from the same “25 Years of Artemis Fowl” panel, which marked a quarter-century since the first novel arrived in 2001.
The series follows the books’ core premise. According to Disney’s announcement, 13-year-old genius Artemis Fowl uncovers an underground world of armed, dangerous and surprisingly high-tech fairies, then hatches a plan to capture one and steal its magic to heal his dying mother and save his family. Disney said the show will dig deeper into the characters and lore of the book series, which Polygon described as Colfer’s “Die Hard with fairies” franchise.
Colfer will produce alongside two Disney animation veterans. Ben Juwono, an Emmy and Annie Award winner whose credits include Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Big Hero 6: The Series, and Colleen Evanson, whose work includes DuckTales and Monsters at Work, are also executive producers, per Deadline and Polygon. “I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the Artemis Fowl animation on screen,” Colfer said. “Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands.”
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, said the books have “captivated readers around the world with unforgettable characters, imaginative world-building, and gripping adventures,” and that the animated format offers a chance to introduce a new generation to the franchise while honoring longtime fans. Disney’s press release put the series’ reach at more than 35 million copies sold worldwide, with translations in 48 languages, and Polygon counted 11 novels in the main series plus a short story and a companion book.
The order also amounts to a reset for the property at Disney. Polygon recalled that the studio’s live-action adaptation was released directly to Disney+ in 2020, drew widely negative reviews and has since been removed from the service. The new version will sit in a growing Disney+ animation slate that, according to Disney, already includes Dragon Striker, Phineas and Ferb and Big City Greens, with Messi and the Giants, Kingdom Hearts, Warrior Cats and Journey on the way. Disney has not announced a voice cast or premiere date, so the next milestones for fans will be casting news and a first look at how the fairy underworld translates to animation.
