US Warned Iran About ISIS Attack: A Tale of Caution and Vigilance

\United States quietly informed Iran about a potential terrorist threat from ISIS before the group carried out a deadly attack near the burial site of Qasem Soleimani on January 3. The warning was based on intelligence gathered by the US and was shared with Iran as part of the US government's commitment to preventing harm, even when dealing with adversarial nations.

The private warning, reported by The Wall Street Journal, is significant because of the strained relations between the US and Iran. Despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties, the US followed a "duty to warn" policy, aiming to prevent potential terrorist threats and protect innocent lives.

Despite the warning, Iran couldn't prevent the ISIS attack, making it the deadliest incident in the country since 1979. The attack, near Soleimani's burial site in southern Iran, resulted in at least 84 casualties and 284 injuries. Notably, the US issued the warning despite recent tensions involving attacks on US personnel by Iranian proxy militias in the Middle East.

The communication channels used for the warning remain undisclosed due to the absence of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries. While the Iranian government has not commented, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack a day later.

The US's obligation to warn, as emphasized by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, underscores the importance of alerting potential victims or those responsible for protection based on credible and specific information about impending threats, irrespective of nationality.
