Podcasting is launching fewer new shows than at any point in nearly a decade, yet more titles are actively publishing than in any year since the pandemic boom, according to third-quarter figures from Listen Notes summarized Oct. 9 by Podcast News Daily. The database counted 563,571 podcasts active so far in 2026 — already more than double either full-year total from 2024 or 2025 — while 113,332 new podcasts had debuted through September, a pace that would mark the fewest annual launches since 2017.

Human-created launches slowed sharply in the third quarter: 25,790 new human shows arrived between July and September, and September alone was the lowest full month of the year, with fewer than half the 20,236 human-created debuts recorded in January, Podcast News Daily reported. Episode output has not collapsed with the launch drought. Listen Notes tallied about 19.8 million episodes published year-to-date through the same window, a run rate that could exceed 26 million for the full year and approach 2025’s 27.3 million — well below the 31-million-plus peaks of 2020–21, but still a heavy production load carried mostly by established catalogs.

Shows are also dying less often. Listen Notes classified 15,985 podcasts as “dead” so far in 2026 — feeds deleted or marked complete — compared with 35,320 for all of 2025 and 47,502 in 2024, and far below the 167,000-plus annual wipeouts of 2020 and 2021. That combination of rising active counts and falling permanent closures paints an industry driven by sustained publishing rather than constant churn, Podcast News Daily argued.

Artificial intelligence now fills a visible share of the launch funnel. Listen Notes separates human-created and AI-generated podcasts in its monthly figures; 10,531 AI-generated shows launched in Q3, about 29% of all new podcasts that quarter. AI’s share peaked at 32.1% in February and eased to 26.1% in September, its lowest level since January. The Listen Notes podcast-stats feed, updated Oct. 10, independently shows the same monthly slide in human-created launches — from 20,249 in January to 8,848 in September — and records roughly 20.4 million new episodes and 116,258 new podcasts year-to-date as of that refresh.

Geography and language remain concentrated. Podcast News Daily said 64.9% of podcasts created so far originated in the United States, with Brazil (5.6%), Indonesia (3.9%), Germany (3.1%) and France (2.6%) trailing; English accounts for about 60.8% of tracked shows, followed by Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian and German. For networks and indie hosts, the takeaway is less gold-rush discovery and more pressure to keep existing shows consistent in a market where algorithms already favor catalogs that publish every week.

Industry trackers and creator tools have spent 2025–26 rebuilding chart and analytics layers after Chartable’s shutdown, making Listen Notes’ public stats one of the few open windows into launch versus activity trends. The October read suggests podcasting’s “quiet boom” belongs to shows that keep shipping episodes, even as first-time creators find a narrower on-ramp. More industry coverage is on our Podcasts page.
