Jac Schaeffer is developing a new “Stargate” television series for Amazon MGM Studios under her overall deal with the company, Variety reported exclusively Oct. 9. Deadline confirmed the same project later that afternoon, saying sources verified Schaeffer is developing the series and that a writers room has opened in New York.

Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures will executive produce alongside Schaeffer, both outlets reported. Variety said a writers’ room was expected to open in the near future; Deadline said the room has already opened. Amazon declined to comment to Deadline, and reps for Amazon and Schaeffer declined to comment to Variety. Neither report named a cast, episode count or premiere window.

The project is Amazon’s second attempt at a new “Stargate” series. A reboot from “Stargate” veteran Martin Gero received a series order from Prime Video in November 2025 but was pulled in June after a 20-week writers room and with U.K. pre-production underway, Deadline reported. Variety likewise noted that Gero’s entry ultimately did not move forward. “Stargate” was among the first MGM titles flagged for film or series adaptations after Amazon’s $8.5 billion acquisition of the studio in 2022, Deadline said — a reminder that the IP has sat near the top of Amazon MGM’s adaptation list even as the first reboot stalled.

Schaeffer created Marvel’s “WandaVision” for Disney+, which earned 23 Primetime Emmy nominations, Variety reported. She later created the “WandaVision” spinoff “Agatha All Along,” serving as showrunner, writer, executive producer and director. Earlier credits cited by Variety include the screenplay for Disney’s “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure” and the 2019 Anne Hathaway–Rebel Wilson comedy “The Hustle.” Deadline framed her as the “WandaVision” creator steering the sci-fi franchise’s latest reboot try, underscoring Amazon’s bet on a showrunner already proven with high-concept genre television.

The “Stargate” franchise began with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin’s 1994 feature starring James Spader and Kurt Russell, followed by “Stargate SG-1” (1997–2007), “Stargate Atlantis” (2004–2009), “Stargate Universe” (2009–2011) and the animated “Stargate Infinity” (2002–2003), Deadline recounted. Variety similarly traced the film-to-series history through “SG-1” and “Atlantis,” noting the long broadcast run that turned the movie into a multi-series TV universe. How much of that continuity the Schaeffer room will keep — or rewrite — has not been disclosed.

Industry timing puts the new room against Amazon MGM’s broader push to turn legacy MGM catalogs into streaming series after the Gero reboot stalled in pre-production. Both trades emphasize that the Schaeffer project is early-stage development under an existing overall deal rather than a firm series greenlight with cameras ready. Until Amazon speaks publicly, the dual-sourced confirmation from Variety and Deadline remains the clearest signal that “Stargate” is back in active development with Safehouse Pictures attached and a writers room already forming in New York.
