The San Francisco 49ers stayed perfect on Sunday, Oct. 11, rallying late at Lumen Field to beat the Seattle Seahawks 32-29 in a chaotic playoff rematch that also produced a league-directed ejection. The Associated Press recap carried by ESPN reported that Brock Purdy led two fourth-quarter scoring drives, the second ending in Eddy Pineiro’s go-ahead field goal with 1:56 to play, as San Francisco improved to 5-0 and dropped Seattle to 3-2. NBC Sports’ ProFootballTalk added that linebacker Dre Greenlaw’s second-quarter ejection was ordered from the NFL’s New York office rather than by the on-field crew.

According to the AP, the teams combined for an NFL season-high seven turnovers, and neither offense produced a touchdown drive longer than 25 yards until San Francisco took over trailing 26-21 late in the third quarter. The 49ers built a 21-13 halftime lead partly on defense, including a Gracen Halton strip of George Halani that Halton recovered in the end zone. Seattle answered after the break, turning a Nehemiah Pritchett interception into a Sam Darnold touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba and adding a field goal after a Deebo Samuel fumble.

Mike Evans, signed in March, swung the fourth quarter. The AP reported that Purdy and Evans connected four times for 75 yards on the go-ahead touchdown drive, including a 28-yard completion on second-and-21 after an intentional grounding penalty. Purdy then hit Brandin Cooks for a 7-yard score and found Evans for the two-point conversion and a 29-26 lead. FOX Sports’ box score credited Evans with seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown. “I do feel like I’m one of the best receivers in the game,” Evans said afterward. Purdy finished 19 of 29 for 189 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Darnold drove Seattle to a tying field goal before Pineiro’s kick restored the lead. On the Seahawks’ last possession, Smith-Njigba dropped a third-down pass, and Cooper Kupp was stopped a yard short on fourth down by Malik Mustapha. In a pool report published by Seahawks.com, NFL vice president of instant replay Mark Butterworth said there was “no video evidence to overturn the call on the field.”

The Greenlaw sequence began when he hit Darnold late after the quarterback scrambled out of bounds. Several Seahawks confronted him, and the AP reported that Greenlaw head-butted Ernest Jones IV, who was not wearing a helmet. Butterworth told the pool reporter that clubs passed a rule this year allowing Art McNally Gameday Central to eject a player even without a flag, and that NFL executive Troy Vincent made the call in this case. The NFL then suspended Greenlaw one game, and on Tuesday, Oct. 13, hearing officer James Thrash upheld the ban on appeal, ESPN reported. Greenlaw will miss the 49ers’ Monday night game against Washington on Oct. 19 and is eligible to return Oct. 20, while the Seahawks visit Denver on Thursday night.
