The Hollywood actor opens up about a decade-long period of estrangement
Renowned Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey recently disclosed that he went through nearly a decade without speaking to his mother, Mary McConaughey. This period of estrangement was the result of his mother's tendency to divulge intimate details about him to the media.
McConaughey, who gained fame in the 1990s with notable roles in films like 'A Time To Kill' and 'Contact', explained that due to his public status, maintaining a close relationship with his mother became challenging. He shared this deeply personal experience on the 'Whine Down' podcast hosted by Jana Kramer.
During the podcast, McConaughey expressed his efforts to mend his relationship with his mother. He recounted, "For eight years, her and I had an estranged relationship where I couldn't have more than a conversation of, 'Hi, Mom, doing good. Love you. Bye.'" He further revealed that he refrained from sharing personal matters with her, as she tended to publicize them.
McConaughey was distressed by his mother's appearances on television programs, where she would discuss his private life, even going as far as revealing sensitive moments from his past. He emphasized, "I tried to change her. I need just a mom right now, not a fan, and I didn't have it."
The actor attempted to rebuild trust by gradually sharing more information with his mother, hoping she would handle it with discretion. However, he eventually realized that perhaps it was wiser to limit the amount of personal information he disclosed.
Reflecting on this period, McConaughey acknowledged that not all relationships require full transparency. He believes in maintaining a certain distance, even with people close to him, as it allows for healthier and more enjoyable interactions.
McConaughey concluded, "There's a lot of people, friends and relationships in my life that I think are better, that I have at an arm's length. We don't need full, all detail, all access intimacy with all people in our life. There's some people I like running into, that's where we're best."
