Twitch Launches Stream Recaps, Turning Clips Into Highlight Reels

Twitch has introduced Stream Recaps, which package clips from a finished livestream into a highlight reel shown at the top of followers' mobile feeds and on channel pages. The company says a promotion program for Recap clips on outside social platforms is coming later this month.

Twitch has introduced Stream Recaps, a feature that packages clips from a finished livestream into a short highlight reel so followers who missed a broadcast can catch up in a few minutes. The company announced the tool on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, in a post on the official Twitch blog written by Chris Miles.

"A Stream Recap is a highlight reel of clips from a livestream, put together for your followers to catch up on what they missed," the company wrote. Recaps appear in a shelf at the top of followers' mobile feeds and also live on a streamer's channel page, according to the post.

How the feature works

According to Twitch, streamers build a Recap after a broadcast by opening their Stream Summary or tapping the plus button in the mobile app. By default, clips made by the streamer and their editors are included, and streamers can remove, add or edit clips at any point. "Ultimately, you are in charge of what gets shared," the blog post said.

The Recap editor shows a filmstrip of a stream's clips, with those already in the Recap placed up front and marked with a checkmark, Twitch said. Streamers can also say "Twitch Clip That" during a live broadcast to create a clip that is added to the Recap automatically, then crop the clip, edit captions or adjust the layout after the stream ends. The voice command first appeared in Twitch's Auto Clips alpha, where, according to the company's help page, saying the phrase creates a clip of the preceding 60 seconds.

The Verge reported the launch the same day, noting that Twitch describes the recaps as a "highlight reel." Digital Trends reported on Oct. 21 that Twitch promoted the feature on its official X account with the message: "Never miss out on a stream again. Catch the top moments with Stream Recaps – available anytime, even when streamers are offline."

Changes from the earlier version

Trade outlet Net Influencer, in an Oct. 22 report, described the launch as a redesign of an earlier version of Recaps that Twitch introduced in May. According to that report, the earlier version required streamers to compile and post clips manually, disappeared after 48 hours and was often confused with Stories. Net Influencer reported that the new Recaps are organized by broadcast on the channel page, can publish automatically about an hour after a stream ends and let streamers turn auto-publishing off. It also reported that a new mobile shelf shows Recaps and Stories from followed channels together, with clips moving to Recaps and Stories reserved for text, image and video updates.

Discovery and promotion beyond Twitch

Twitch said comments and reactions on Recap clips will help streamers see which moments resonated most, and that the same engagement can help the platform identify clips to recommend to new viewers in places such as the Clips and Live feeds. It said it is investing in more ways for clips to reach viewers, "from Category Pages to Search and more."

The blog post also said that "later this month," Twitch will offer a promotion opportunity for clips shared in Stream Recaps, "promoting you on third-party social media to help you reach new audiences on Twitch and beyond," with more details to come. Net Influencer reported that the program is called Recaps Spotlight, that it is optional and open to eligible Twitch Partners starting Oct. 27, and that selected clips may be promoted on Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. Twitch's own announcement did not name the program, give a start date or list specific platforms.

What Twitch's CEO said ahead of the launch

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy previewed the idea in an interview with GamesBeat at Tokyo Game Show 2026, published Sept. 29. GamesBeat reported that the tool would let creators select between five and eight clips at the end of a stream to form a highlight reel, and that Clancy said it would arrive in "the coming weeks."

"From a viewer perspective, at any given moment of a stream, probably only 10 percent of your community is there, right?" Clancy told GamesBeat. He added: "You can also go back and look at a Recap a week later, two weeks later — a year later. All of these reels will live on in perpetuity, so that gives you a very easy summary of your stream that's targeted for the community."

Clancy also tied the effort to sponsorships, according to GamesBeat. "That will help our creators, because now, let's say someone does a sponsorship on Twitch — it might only be 15 percent of their community that was there during the sponsorship," he said. "Create a clip from different pieces, redistribute it on Twitch, and you get greater reach, and that will help them make more money."

GamesBeat reported that Clancy described the Recaps feed as an evolution of Stories, which Twitch launched in 2023. Explaining the focus on clips, he said feeds are "more and more, being dominated with AI," and that a Twitch clip is "kind of messy and noisy, and you know it's not AI."
