Taylor Sheridan Writes Sicario 3 as Threequel Moves Ahead

Taylor Sheridan has written the script for a third Sicario film, Variety reported Oct. 1, with Polygon amplifying the update Oct. 3 as the long-gestating threequel moves closer to production.

Variety’s conversation with NBCUniversal chair Donna Langley notes Sheridan wrote scripts for Paramount’s Call of Duty movie and Sicario 3 while discussing how a stronger film pact helped Universal recruit him. Polygon frames the confirmation as the clearest signal yet that Sheridan is returning to the cartel thriller series.

Josh Brolin has said he will return as CIA officer Matt Graver and told ScreenRant production is expected to start soon, Polygon recounts, citing earlier August coverage also tracked by Deadline. Benicio del Toro’s Alejandro survived Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018), leaving open a possible return; Emily Blunt sat out the sequel, and no director has been announced for the third film, often referred to as Sicario: Capos. The franchise has been in development since around 2018, with pauses including the 2023 WGA strike.

Denis Villeneuve directed the 2015 original; Stefano Sollima directed the 2018 follow-up. Villeneuve is finishing Dune Part Three and is attached to the next James Bond film, making a near-term return unlikely. Sheridan remains deep in Paramount TV commitments including Yellowstone spinoffs, Landman and Lioness even as his Universal film deal phases in. Polygon also notes Sheridan’s Call of Duty script with Peter Berg attached to direct, slated for June 30, 2028.
