Sacrifice Trailer: Chris Evans Taken Hostage by Anya Taylor-Joy Cult

Netflix has unveiled the trailer for Sacrifice, Romain Gavras’s adventure-comedy starring Chris Evans as a fading superstar kidnapped at an environmental gala by Joan—played by Anya Taylor-Joy—and her radical followers planning a volcanic offering. The Hindu reported the trailer’s Sept. 17 release, noting that Will Arbery and Gavras wrote the screenplay and that Gavras also directs the English-language feature. The tone mixes absurdist comedy with hypnotic imagery as Joan announces that an extinction event is coming and that “the mountain of fire is famished.”

IndieWire framed the setup as a Ruben Östlund-ish takedown of celebrity vapidity and performative activism. Evans’s character is trying to stage a personal and professional resurrection after an ill-timed public meltdown, inching back into the selfie-ready world of prestige charity nights when masked radicals crash a black-tie eco-gala and demand hostages. What first looks like an elaborate prank hardens into a high-stakes ordeal that asks whether belief, delusion, and media spectacle can still be told apart.

The ensemble also includes Vincent Cassel, Sam Richardson, John Malkovich, and Salma Hayek Pinault in pivotal roles, with IndieWire adding Ambika Mod, Yung Lean, and Charli XCX to the guest list. Netflix describes the film as blending dark comedy, suspense, and psychological drama aimed at celebrity culture, elite hypocrisy, and the search for meaning in a world built on appearances. Gavras filmed across Greece, including a volcano in Santorini and a marble quarry in Volakas, giving the trailer its stark landscape contrast to the gala’s champagne gloss.

Producers include Gavras, Robert Walak, Jacob Perlin, Gregory Jankilevitsch, Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska, and Giorgios Karnavas. Sacrifice premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, where IndieWire’s festival coverage called it a propulsive comedy that gradually melts into a dreamlike modern fable more interested in truth and performance than easy satire targets. Netflix acquired domestic rights in May and will stream the film in the United States and France on Oct. 16, 2026.

Evans was recently seen opposite Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal in The Materialists and is slated to return as Captain America in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday. For Taylor-Joy, Joan continues a run of charismatic extremists and antiheroes; for Gavras, the Netflix bow marks a splashy English-language step after a career known for kinetic, politically charged filmmaking. October’s streamer date now gives audiences a firm calendar pin for a hostage comedy that wants to roast fame culture—and then throw it into the magma.
