Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 Sets Nov. 12 Prime Video Global Premiere
Prime Video set a Nov. 12 worldwide streaming premiere for Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 after a record theatrical run. Variety put the gross at $86 million, calling it the highest-grossing Tamil film ever; it streams in five languages in 240-plus countries.
Prime Video has set a worldwide streaming premiere for Rajinikanth’s “Jailer 2” on Nov. 12, 2026, according to Variety, The Hollywood Reporter India and MediaNews4U. The exclusive digital launch follows what the streamer described as a record-breaking theatrical run in India and overseas, Variety reported on Nov. 4.
Variety said the film has grossed $86 million so far, making it the highest-grossing Tamil-language film of all time. THR India likewise described “Jailer 2” as having become the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time roughly a week before the streaming announcement. The sequel will stream in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada across India and more than 240 countries and territories, the outlets reported.
Nelson Dilipkumar directed the action-crime sequel, produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures. Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired prison officer introduced in the 2023 original “Jailer,” with music by Anirudh Ravichander, Variety, MediaNews4U and Kerala TV reported.
Plot setup and theatrical window
Coverage across the Nov. 4–5 reports said the new film picks up where the first “Jailer” ended. A crime syndicate with political influence and overseas reach endangers Muthuvel’s family and pulls him out of retirement. Former adversaries resurface and new alliances form as he works to protect his relatives and regain control, according to plot summaries in Variety and MediaNews4U.
THR India described Muthuvel in the sequel as a reserved man living behind the appearance of an ordinary car driver. Kerala TV said “Jailer 2” opened theatrically on Oct. 15, 2026, and that the film’s Kerala distribution team reported about 1,600 housefull shows on opening day across roughly 800 screens in the state.
Variety reported that Rajinikanth now holds the top three positions on the all-time Tamil box-office chart, with “Jailer 2” followed by “2.0” and the first “Jailer,” while “Coolie” sits at No. 5. The first “Jailer” is already available on Prime Video; the sequel will join it on the Nov. 12 premiere date, Variety and Kerala TV said.
Ensemble spanning Indian film industries
Variety and MediaNews4U listed special appearances by Malayalam star Mohanlal, Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan and Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi, with Kannada star Shivarajkumar also among the high-profile cast. The wider ensemble named across those outlets and THR India includes SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Ramya Krishnan, Namo Narayana and Yogi Babu.
Kerala TV noted that the Malayalam audio track and Mohanlal’s cameo are especially relevant for Kerala audiences after the film’s strong theatrical opening there, and that Prime Video will also offer Telugu, Hindi and Kannada versions alongside the original Tamil. Availability of other Rajinikanth titles already on the platform, including “Coolie,” “Vettaiyan” and “Darbar,” may vary by region, Kerala TV added.
Director’s comments on the streaming move
Director Nelson Dilipkumar commented on the theatrical response and the digital premiere in remarks carried by Variety, THR India and MediaNews4U. “The response to ‘Jailer’ was extraordinary, and the love audiences have shown for Muthuvel Pandian has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey,” he said. “With ‘Jailer 2,’ we wanted to build on that special connection while taking the story, action, scale, and emotional stakes to an entirely new level.”
“Having Rajinikanth sir reprise his iconic role as Muthuvel Pandian, alongside such a formidable ensemble cast, with Anirudh’s music adding its own distinctive energy, made this chapter particularly exciting for us,” Dilipkumar added, according to the same reports. “Following the film’s spectacular theatrical response, we’re delighted to bring ‘Jailer 2’ to Prime Video, where it will join ‘Jailer,’ taking both chapters of Muthuvel Pandian’s story to audiences in India and across the world.”
MediaNews4U’s Nov. 5 report framed the Nov. 12 date as an exclusive global streaming premiere. Together with Variety’s Nov. 4 trade coverage and THR India’s same-day confirmation, the outlets present a consistent schedule: multilingual availability on Prime Video beginning Nov. 12, 2026, after the mid-October theatrical launch and the film’s reported climb to the top of the Tamil box-office chart.
