Lucy Hale to Lead Roku’s Sherlock Holmes Rom-Com ‘Scarlett Holmes’
Lucy Hale will star in and executive produce Scarlett Holmes, a Roku limited series about a Sherlock Holmes descendant who solves love mysteries, debuting in 2027.
Lucy Hale is trading crime scenes for meet-cutes. Roku has greenlit “Scarlett Holmes,” a Roku Original limited series that puts a romantic spin on the world of Sherlock Holmes, with the “Pretty Little Liars” star set to lead and executive produce, Deadline and Variety reported on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The series is set to debut exclusively on The Roku Channel in 2027.
Hale plays the title character, a modern descendant of Sherlock Holmes who has inherited the family’s legendary powers of observation. Instead of solving crimes, though, Scarlett takes on mysteries of love, dating and relationships. Each episode’s storyline draws inspiration from a beloved romantic comedy, according to the official description quoted by both outlets.
She won’t be working alone. Scarlett is joined in each episode by her trusty sidekick, Jane Watson, as the pair help clients navigate mixed signals, secret crushes and romantic dilemmas. But while Scarlett may be an expert at solving everyone else’s romantic problems, her own love life proves far harder to decipher. The central complication arrives when she falls for Ollie, a charming podcast producer who is secretly planning an exposé on her methods, leaving her with what the logline calls “the toughest case of all: her own.” Deadline reports that casting for the Watson and Ollie roles has not yet been announced.
Hale said the project spoke directly to her taste. “I am a true diehard fan of romantic comedies, and ‘Scarlett Holmes’ has that special something that made me fall in love with the genre in the first place,” she said in a statement. “And I love that it brings mystery into the rom-com world in a way that feels really fresh and fun. It’s charming, sexy, funny and has a lot of heart. Scarlett is smart, curious, a little complicated and like so many of us, looking for love. I feel completely thrilled to step into her shoes.”
Roku is framing the show as a two-genre play. “Lucy Hale has the wit, warmth and comedic instincts that make her the perfect creative partner to bring ‘Scarlett Holmes’ to life,” said Brian Tannenbaum, head of Roku Originals, per Deadline. “This smart, sophisticated series celebrates two genres our streamers love—romance and mystery—through a fresh, playful take on one of the most recognizable legacies in storytelling.”
The series is written by Paris Herbert-Taylor and Katie Wilbert and produced by Jaggi Entertainment, with Sophie Tilson and Steve Jaggi executive producing alongside Hale. Morgan Pichinson and Sabrina Lyall oversee the project for Roku, and Jaggi Entertainment is handling international sales, both outlets reported. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Herbert-Taylor’s credits include “On the Roam” and Wilbert’s include “A Vineyard Christmas.”
The role fits a run of romance and mystery work for Hale, whose credits include “F, Marry, Kill,” Hulu’s “Which Brings Me to You,” “Puppy Love,” “The Hating Game” and “Ragdoll.” Deadline reports that she recently wrapped the thriller “Legacy” and the romantic comedy “Princess,” and that she is executive producing the mystery drama “Dead Letters,” in development at Netflix, in which she will play a dual role.
