Shia LaBeouf Agrees to Void FKA twigs NDA, Ending Her Lawsuit
FKA twigs has settled her lawsuit against Shia LaBeouf after he agreed the NDA in their 2025 settlement is void, freeing her to speak about her abuse allegations.
FKA twigs has settled her lawsuit against ex-boyfriend Shia LaBeouf over a nondisclosure agreement, and the actor has agreed that the confidentiality terms she challenged are “terminated and void,†according to court filings reported by the Los Angeles Times and The Hollywood Reporter. The singer’s lawyer called the outcome “an important victory†for women who speak out about sexual abuse.
The Grammy-winning musician, whose legal name is Tahliah Barnett, filed a notice of settlement in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Monday and a request to dismiss the case with prejudice on Tuesday, the Times reported. A dismissal with prejudice means the case cannot be brought again. The notice states that LaBeouf “has agreed that the non-disclosure provisions (NDAs) contained†in the pair’s 2025 settlement “are terminated and void.â€
The dispute grew out of an earlier case. Barnett sued LaBeouf in 2020, accusing him of verbal and emotional abuse that escalated into physical assaults, and the two settled that suit last year, according to the Times. LaBeouf later filed an arbitration demand claiming she had breached the settlement in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published in October 2025, in which she said, “No, I wouldn’t say I feel safe.†That arbitration was later dismissed, THR reported.
Barnett responded in March with a lawsuit arguing that the 2025 settlement contained an unlawful NDA. According to THR, the agreement restricted her not only from describing her own alleged experience but also from discussing the issue of sexual abuse in general terms. Her suit, which did not seek damages, argued that those terms violated California’s STAND Act, a 2018 law that bars nondisclosure agreements in sexual assault, harassment and discrimination cases. LaBeouf’s lawyers had argued the law did not apply because her 2020 suit alleged sexual battery rather than sexual assault, THR reported.
“This represents an important victory for the principle that women who speak out about sexual abuse should not be silenced by NDAs that contravene California law,†attorney Mathew Rosengart wrote in the filing, as quoted by both outlets. “FKA twigs is proud to be able to continue speaking about her experience and advocating for other women, including those who may lack the resources to speak out and defend themselves.â€
In a further statement to the Times, Rosengart said the result “completely frees twigs to discuss her experience, advocate for other women who might be less privileged, and support the charitable causes of her choice.†He told THR that she “stood up for something larger than herself, female survivors of sexual abuse.â€
LaBeouf’s side struck a conciliatory tone. “Shia wishes Twigs nothing but the best in her life and career and, to that end, has agreed to end their long-standing dispute,†his attorney, Shawn Holley, said in a statement reported by both outlets. “Twigs has spoken about this matter for years and there is now nothing to prevent her from continuing to do so.†LaBeouf’s legal team denied the claims in her March lawsuit when it was filed, the Times reported.
