Jennifer Lawrence to Star in Zach Cregger’s ‘The Flood’

Jennifer Lawrence will star in Zach Cregger’s original sci-fi thriller The Flood for Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, set for theatrical release on Aug. 11, 2028, Variety and Deadline reported.

Cregger will write, produce, and direct from his original idea, reuniting with the Warner Bros./New Line team behind his 2025 horror hit Weapons. Amblin Entertainment is producing alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment. Plot details and further casting remain under wraps, both trades said.

Lawrence, an Academy Award winner for Silver Linings Playbook, is coming off a slate that includes Die My Love with Robert Pattinson and upcoming work such as Martin Scorsese’s What Happens at Night and the Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping, Variety noted. Cregger said he was “beyond excited” to see her in the role after calling the New Line collaboration on Weapons “an absolute dream.” Warner Bros. co-chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy praised Lawrence as “one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today” and said they were thrilled to reunite with Cregger, Vertigo, and Amblin.

The announcement lands as Cregger’s Resident Evil adaptation for Sony/Constantin crossed the $200 million global mark, Deadline reported, underscoring his post-Barbarian commercial heat. Weapons itself grossed about $270 million worldwide on a reported budget under $40 million and earned Amy Madigan a supporting-actress Oscar, Variety noted.

For franchise-and-prestige watchers on Hollywood, pairing an Oscar-winning lead with Creggers original sci-fi brief is a clear Aug. 2028 tentpole marker.
