Fact Check: Is a $100 Trillion Wealth Transfer Coming Within 10 Years? What the Data Says About John Hope Bryant's Claims

An Instagram reel from Operation HOPE founder John Hope Bryant says $100 trillion will change hands in 10 years and $15 trillion in businesses lack succession plans. Census, Cerulli, Gallup and Exit Planning Institute data show where the claims hold up and where they stretch.

An Instagram reel posted Oct. 18, 2026, by John Hope Bryant says the largest wealth transfer in history is about to happen, and that younger Americans are missing the chance to buy the businesses involved. Some numbers hold up in some form. Others do not match published data.

What Bryant said

The reel shows a panel clip from Invest Fest 2025. Bryant is the founder, chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE, a nonprofit focused on financial literacy. His caption reads:

"There's $100 trillion about to change hands. Over the next 10 years, baby boomers will pass down the largest wealth transfer in history. More people are over 65 than under 18 — and many of them are wealthy, retiring, and ready to let go of their businesses. Here's the kicker: There's $15 trillion in profitable, cash-flowing businesses with no succession plan. The next generation isn't buying businesses — they're missing the opportunity to own legacy, not just income."

The caption also promotes his book Financial Literacy for All, his "Money & Wealth" podcast and Operation HOPE coaching.

The $100 trillion figure: right scale, longer clock

The best-known projection is from Cerulli Associates. It estimates that $124 trillion will transfer through 2048. Of that, $105 trillion goes to heirs and $18 trillion to charity. Nearly $100 trillion comes from baby boomers and older generations.

That is a roughly 25-year projection, not a 10-year one. Cerulli's decade-scale figures are smaller: Gen X is projected to inherit about $14 trillion and millennials about $8 trillion over the next 10 years.

Other estimates run lower. UBS projects more than $83 trillion globally over 20 to 25 years, with the U.S. at over $29 trillion. A July 2026 Visa analysis, reported by CNBC, put boomer wealth at about $93 trillion and estimated boomers will pass on $36 trillion over 20 years, after subtracting debt, the top 1%'s wealth, retirement spending, charity and taxes. The studies measure different things.

Verdict: a transfer of this size is projected, but "$100 trillion in 10 years" is faster than any source reviewed.

"More people are over 65 than under 18": not yet nationally

This is not true for the U.S. as a whole. Census Bureau Vintage 2025 estimates put the 65-and-older population at 64.6 million on July 1, 2025, against 72.0 million under 18. The gap is about 7.4 million, down from about 18.2 million in 2020.

It is true in parts of the country. In Vintage 2024 estimates, older adults outnumbered children in 11 states: Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia. That compares with three states in 2020. Older adults also outnumbered children in 1,411 of 3,144 counties, or about 45%.

The national crossover is projected. Census's 2023 projections put it at 2029 in the main series, with a range of 2028 to 2030 across immigration scenarios. Earlier 2017 projections said 2034, so that date is now outdated.

The $15 trillion business figure

No primary source for "$15 trillion in profitable, cash-flowing businesses with no succession plan" turned up. The closest published figure is from the Exit Planning Institute (EPI). Its 2023 survey of 1,162 owners found 75% want to exit within 10 years. EPI said that could mean 4.5 million privately held businesses transitioning, representing "nearly $14 trillion of business wealth." That is a survey-based estimate of transitioning businesses, not of businesses without a plan.

On planning, the data is mixed. In EPI's survey, only 15% of boomer owners had a written company transition plan. Gallup, using Census data, found 52.3% of U.S. employer businesses, about 3 million of nearly 6 million, are owned by people 55 or older. Among employer-business owners, 74% planned to sell or transfer the business, 11% to close it, and 16% had no long-term plan or were unsure. Across all owners, including those with no employees, 33% had no plan or were unsure.

Verdict: the order of magnitude matches EPI's estimate, but the "no succession plan" and "profitable" framing is not established by the data. Business value is also part of household wealth, so it overlaps the $100 trillion.

Is the next generation buying businesses?

Some are. Entrepreneurship through acquisition, often through "search funds," has grown. Stanford's 2024 study found a record 94 core search funds launched in 2023, though acquisitions fell to 29 that year from a peak of 40 in 2021. Stanford's 2026 study says launches stayed at historically high levels in 2024 and 2025. About half of funds launched from 2021 to 2024 acquired a company; the median 2024-25 purchase price was $16 million.

The scale is small next to millions of owners nearing retirement. The data reviewed does not show the share of all small-business buyers who are young, so that claim can be neither confirmed nor refuted.

The event and the speaker

Invest Fest 2025 ran Aug. 22–24 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. It is produced by Earn Your Leisure, co-founded in 2018 by Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings. The festival's schedule lists a "Vision & Value" session with Bryant and Dr. Jatali Bellanton on Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m. Bryant thanked @rashadbilal, @themasterinvestor (Ian Dunlap) and @jetalibellanton for moderating. Operation HOPE's biography lists Bryant as host of "Money & Wealth with John Hope Bryant" and author of Financial Literacy for All.

Bottom line

  • $100 trillion in 10 years: projected over about 25 years; lower in other studies.
  • More over 65 than under 18: false nationally today; true in 11 states; projected nationally for 2029.
  • $15 trillion, no succession plan: near EPI's $14 trillion transition estimate; "no plan" and "profitable" not supported.
  • Next generation isn't buying: search-fund buying is growing from a small base.
