United Airlines and Spotify on Nov. 5, 2026, began letting passengers log in to their own Spotify accounts on Starlink-equipped seatback screens to stream saved podcasts, video podcasts, music and audiobooks, according to both companies and reports by The Verge, Engadget, Aviacionline and PAX International. United Airlines and Spotify on Nov. 5, 2026, began letting passengers log in to their own Spotify accounts on seatback screens aboard Starlink-equipped United aircraft, giving travelers access to their saved podcasts, video podcasts, music, audiobooks and playlists in flight, according to a United Airlines press release, a Spotify newsroom post, and reports by The Verge, Engadget, Aviacionline, and PAX International. United said it is the first airline to let customers access their personal Spotify accounts directly from a seatback screen.

The airline's announcement highlighted video podcasts as part of the offering, naming On Purpose with Jay Shetty as one of the titles passengers can watch from their own accounts, alongside the full-cast graphic adaptation of Jenny Han's To All the Boys I've Loved Before. United said customers can reach the full Spotify catalog, which it described as more than 100 million tracks plus millions of podcasts, playlists, videos and albums, with available content and features varying by Spotify plan and market. Podcast industry newsletter Podnews also reported the launch in its Nov. 6 edition.

How the seatback login works

According to Spotify, passengers on an eligible flight connect their phone to the "United" Wi-Fi network, tap the Spotify tile on the seatback screen, scan the displayed QR code with the phone's camera, and confirm pairing on the phone. Spotify said a Wi-Fi pass and a MileagePlus sign-in are not required to use the seatback app, and Engadget reported that connecting to Wi-Fi for Spotify is free. Listeners already logged in to Spotify on their phone are paired automatically; others are prompted to log in or sign up on the phone, according to Spotify and United.

Once connected, passengers can resume a video podcast, music, audiobooks or playlists where they left off, browse their library and personalized recommendations, and save new items to their library, United and Spotify said. Spotify added that features such as its DJ and music videos are available, that audio keeps playing while travelers use other seatback features such as the flight map, and that a small on-screen player controls playback. Travelers can optionally use their phone as a companion remote, the companies said, a detail also reported by PAX International.

Spotify said login details are never entered on the seatback screen, that passengers are automatically logged out at the end of the flight, and that the screen is reset before the next passengers board. Both Spotify Free and Premium listeners can use the app, with playback options depending on their plan and market, according to Spotify.

Rollout timeline and fleet scale

The feature is rolling out on United's Starlink-equipped aircraft now and will expand to additional aircraft through 2027, Spotify said. United said the Spotify rollout will reach half of its fleet by next spring, a timeline also reported by Aviacionline and PAX International. Travelers on flights without the new app can still use the curated Spotify channel introduced last year, which Spotify said is available across United's fleet with 450 hours of playlists, podcasts and audiobooks.

United said Starlink Wi-Fi is available on more than half of its daily flights and that it expects to complete Starlink installations by the end of 2027. Engadget, citing the airline, described the share as nearly half of daily departures. Aviacionline reported that United Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby said on Oct. 21 that the company expects to offer Starlink on 61% of its flights by the end of 2026. United said it currently offers more than 181,000 seatback screens, about 85% of its mainline fleet, and expects to have more than 219,000 screens, nearly its entire mainline fleet, by the end of 2027.

Building on the 2025 Spotify channel

United first added an exclusive collection of Spotify content to its seatback screens in June 2025, including more than 450 hours of audiobooks, video podcasts and music playlists, according to the airline. Since then, more than 2.3 million customers have used more than 1.9 million hours of Spotify content onboard, United said, figures also cited by PAX International and Aviacionline. United said it also offers more than 2,500 hours of premium entertainment, including content from Apple TV, HBO Max, A24 and Peacock.

"Our customers are used to streaming entertainment that's tailored to them, and that level of personalization shouldn't stop when they board one of our planes," Andrew Nocella, United's chief commercial officer, said in the company's release. Ian Geller, Spotify's vice president of business development, said in statements published by both companies: "Bringing personal Spotify accounts to United seatback screens is a major milestone, creating a new way to experience Spotify in flight."

Starlink connectivity and future app partners

In an interview with The Verge's Andrew J. Hawkins, Grant Milstead, United's vice president for digital, said low-latency connectivity made the integration possible. "Without Starlink, we couldn't generate that living-room-in-the-sky experience," Milstead said. The Verge reported that United built a custom, native Spotify app for its seatback displays and is looking to partner with other third-party streaming apps; Mark Muren, United's managing director for product marketing, told the outlet that the Spotify deal will serve as a blueprint for integrations to come.

The Verge reported that other carriers are also installing satellite Wi-Fi, including American, Qatar, Emirates, Lufthansa, Air France and British Airways with Starlink, while Delta Air Lines is partnering with Amazon's LEO project and JetBlue is staying with Viasat-powered Fly-Fi. Engadget noted that other airlines, such as American Airlines, already offer music streaming as a perk through seatback screens or free access to certain apps on passengers' own devices, and that the Spotify integration lets travelers use the larger seatback screen for video podcasts and music videos. Engadget also pointed travelers to United's Starlink Wi-Fi Tracker to check whether a flight has Starlink service.
