Podcast advertising is scaling into programmatic channels, and executives at last week’s IAB Podcast Upfront and Sounds Profitable Business Summit warned that rising ad loads could erode the format’s trust edge, AdExchanger and EMARKETER reported.

Digital audio — podcasts plus streaming radio and music — drew $8.4 billion in ad revenue in 2025, up 10.2% from 2024, according to the IAB figures cited by AdExchanger. The trade group expects podcasting ad revenue to grow another 8.7% this year. Agency programmatic buying of audio jumped from 41% in 2022 to 82% this year in a survey of more than 300 agencies by Advertiser Perceptions and Cumulus Media/Westwood One.

Amazon’s DSP integrated podcast inventory from SiriusXM, Spotify, Acast, and iHeartRadio earlier this summer, ART19’s Billy Hartman said at the Upfront, opening “the open internet of podcasts” to programmatic buyers, AdExchanger reported. Oxford Road’s James Vakula said brands increasingly run a roughly 70/30 mix of host-read and programmatic ads, using host-reads for trust and programmatic for mid- and long-tail reach.

Frequency is the flash point. Podscribe’s Cam Weber cautioned that impression-based campaigns can expose a listener to more than 15 ads across a buy, versus about one ad per episode in traditional episode-level deals, both AdExchanger and EMARKETER noted. Colleague Matt Drengler’s shorthand advice: “Frequency caps.”

EMARKETER projects U.S. programmatic podcast ad spending will reach $462.2 million in 2027 — nearly double 2024’s $232.6 million — and account for 15.6% of total programmatic digital audio services spend. Only 25% of U.S. media consumers call podcast ads annoying, versus 50% for online display and 46% for YouTube and other video ads, per YouGov data cited by EMARKETER, but that tolerance could shrink if loads climb.

At Sounds Profitable, Acast CEO Greg Glenday and Right Side Up’s Krystina Rubino framed Spotify’s tested “skip ahead” button as a symptom of overload rather than the root cause. Rubino compared the panic to mid-2010s display viewability: publishers will lose some impressions and must prove performance on what remains. Glenday warned against unskippable “hostage” formats, saying podcasting’s trust margin is thinner than radio’s because listeners can abandon a show permanently.

For readers following the audio business on Podcast News, the takeaway is complementary inventory, not a replacement war. Programmatic can extend host-read campaigns into back catalogs and long-tail shows without stuffing every new episode — if buyers set hard frequency caps and watch retention.

Verified points as of the Sept. 24–25 reports: $8.4B digital audio ads in 2025; 82% of surveyed agencies now buy audio programmatically; Amazon DSP added SiriusXM, Spotify, Acast, and iHeart inventory; Oxford Road cites ~70/30 host-read/programmatic mixes; impression-based buys can exceed 15 ads per listener; EMARKETER sees $462.2M U.S. programmatic podcast spend in 2027; YouGov finds podcast ads less annoying than display or video. How networks and platforms police ad load will decide whether programmatic growth compounds trust or burns it.
