Security agents protecting President Biden's granddaughter respond with gunfire as three individuals attempt to break into an unmarked vehicle in Washington, D.C. No injuries reported. Investigation underway by Metropolitan Police.
In a late-night incident in Washington, security agents guarding Naomi Biden, President Joe Biden’s granddaughter, discharged their firearms as three individuals attempted to break into an unmarked Secret Service vehicle.
Security agents accompanying Naomi Biden in the Georgetown neighborhood witnessed the trio breaking a window of the parked, unoccupied SUV. One of the agents fired shots, but fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, as reported by the security service. The suspects quickly fled the scene in a red car, prompting the security service to issue a regional bulletin to Metropolitan Police for their apprehension.
The Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the shooting, a standard procedure for all police-involved incidents in the capital. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will independently review the facts and evidence of the case.
This event occurred amid a surge in carjackings and vehicle thefts in Washington, with over 750 carjackings and 6,000 stolen vehicle reports this year. The rise in violent crime has also been notable, witnessing an increase of more than 40% compared to the previous year.
In recent weeks, U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas fell victim to a carjacking near the Capitol, emphasizing the growing concern of such incidents in the area. The heightened security challenges extend beyond vehicle-related crimes, with incidents like the assault on U.S. Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota earlier this year adding to the overall increase in violent crime in the nation's capital.
