London tribunal allows mass lawsuit against Apple over iPhone batteries. Consumer advocate claims concealed defects. Apple denies allegations.
Apple Inc faced a setback on Wednesday as it failed to halt a large-scale lawsuit in London. The lawsuit, led by consumer champion Justin Gutmann, represents iPhone users in the United Kingdom. The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) ruled that the case can proceed.
Gutmann's legal team argued that Apple concealed battery issues in specific iPhone models. They claimed that Apple discreetly installed a power management tool through software updates, intentionally limiting the phones' performance.
Apple staunchly opposed the lawsuit, deeming it "baseless." They adamantly refuted the claim that iPhone batteries were inherently flawed. Apple acknowledged a small number of iPhone 6s models with battery issues and offered free replacements.
The CAT determined that Gutmann's claim should move forward. However, they noted a need for greater clarity and specificity in the case. These points must be addressed before any trial proceeds. The decision marks a significant development in the ongoing legal battle between Apple and concerned iPhone users in the UK.
