Julia Roberts expresses excitement for a potential My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel. Dive into the latest on her iconic rom-com aspirations and cast updates!
Iconic actress Julia Roberts recently expressed her eagerness for a sequel to the beloved 1997 romantic comedy, My Best Friend’s Wedding. During a lively interview on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, the Oscar-winning star enthusiastically chose the film when asked which one she'd like to see continued.
Directed by P.J. Hogan, My Best Friend's Wedding tells the story of Jules (played by Roberts), a food journalist realizing her love for her best friend, Michael (Dermot Mulroney), who announces his engagement to Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). Jules, desperate to win him back, hatches various schemes, including a fake engagement to her gay best friend, George (Rupert Everett).
Despite the original film ending with Michael choosing Kimmy, Roberts is intrigued by the possibility of exploring the characters' lives further. She emphasized the ensemble cast's depth and pondered the dynamics between the characters, expressing curiosity about Kimmy and Michael's marriage.
During the interview, Roberts humorously addressed a viewer's question about who Michael should have chosen, playfully sticking with her character, Jules. She acknowledged the storyline outcome, saying, "Well, I mean, of course, Jules. But he married Kimmy!"
Dermot Mulroney, who portrayed Michael, had previously expressed openness to a sequel on The Talk in 2018. The cast reunited in 2019 for Entertainment Weekly's romantic comedy issue, reflecting on the film's success and speculating on where their characters might be now.
As the film celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2002, Roberts highlighted the genuine chemistry among the cast, emphasizing the lasting friendship that developed during the movie's production. The actress even playfully speculated about her character, suggesting that Jules might be a marriage counselor in a potential sequel.
