Israel's Tactical Seawater Operation Against Hamas Tunnels

Israel's military has launched an operation to flood the tunnels reportedly occupied by Hamas fighters in Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have strategically deployed five pumping stations to inundate the intricate network of tunnels, believed to serve as hiding spots and hostage locations for Hamas militants.

Commencing on Tuesday, according to US officials, the operation is expected to extend over several weeks, a significant development that underscores the complexity of the conflict. Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, addressing reporters during a press conference, expressed support for the tactical approach.

"Targeting the underground infrastructure in Gaza is a key aspect of our mission. We were well aware of the extensive network. Our goal is to dismantle and destroy this infrastructure. Our methods to address the tunnels include explosive measures for destruction and other tactics to prevent Hamas from utilizing them against our soldiers," stated Lt Gen Halevi.

The initiation of this strategic move coincides with the release of IDF footage showcasing troops engaging and neutralizing Hamas militants within Gaza City. The footage provides a firsthand glimpse into the challenges faced by Israeli soldiers as they navigate the complex and dangerous underground passages.

Israel's Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, asserted that Israeli forces are making significant headway, penetrating deep underground and claiming that certain Hamas units are on the brink of dissolution. In an effort to substantiate these claims, the IDF released footage from a soldier's head-cam, documenting an intense confrontation with a Hamas gunman, ultimately resulting in the militant's demise despite injuries sustained by the Israeli soldier.

"IDF troops are conducting extensive operations deep underground, identifying and demolishing Hamas infrastructures. This brings Gaza City closer to a breakthrough," emphasized Minister Gallant.

In tandem with these developments, Israel declared 19 individuals, among the 135 still held captive in Gaza, as deceased in absentia. This declaration followed the successful recovery of the bodies of two hostages. The list included a Tanzanian national, as confirmed by the government press office.

Addressing the ongoing conflict, President Biden acknowledged the challenging circumstances faced by Israel during a Hanukkah reception at the White House. He underscored the continued provision of military assistance to Israel while urging caution to prevent any abrupt shifts in global public opinion.

Amidst international calls for a ceasefire, the Palestinian foreign minister accused Israel of contributing to the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The UN World Food Programme's claim that half of Gaza's population is allegedly facing starvation due to Israel's military assault has been disputed by Israeli authorities.

"As we speak, at least one million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, including half of them children, are grappling with starvation," asserted Riyad al-Maliki, the Palestinian foreign minister, during a UN event.

As Israel navigates international scrutiny, Minister Gallant rebuffed calls to halt the military operation, emphasizing the complexity and time required for its conclusion. He emphasized a commitment to safeguarding Israel's future and hinted at an impending shift towards a lower-intensity phase targeting pockets of resistance in the ongoing conflict.
