Lilly Broadcasting, the parent company of WIPU-TV, Erie's NBC affiliate, confirmed the passing of Emily Matson, a cherished news anchor and reporter. Matson, who dedicated nearly two decades to WIPU, was 42 years old at the time of her death on December 11.

The broadcaster expressed profound sadness, stating, "It is with a very heavy heart that we have learned of the passing of our beloved Erie News Now news anchor Emily Matson." Described as a shining light in the newsroom, Matson delivered news with passion and love for the Erie community and Northwest Pennsylvania.

Matson's journey in the world of news began as an intern at WJET-TV in Erie in the early 2000s. After a stint at WICU, where she produced the morning show, Matson transitioned to an on-air reporter role. Expressing her dedication, she mentioned, "I feel I’m really making a difference in the Erie community, meeting new people, and telling the stories that affect everybody every day."

Her career advanced as she became the co-anchor for WICU's nightly 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. broadcasts. Matson's exceptional work earned her two Outstanding Spot News Awards from the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters.
